Short Exchange Visits of Faculty and Students Print E-mail

NemaSym RCN will support short exchange visits of faculty and students to another laboratory.  We believe these exchange visits will be an excellent opportunity for participants to form collaborations, be informed about current developments in their field, and learn new techniques.  To apply please fill in the application form and provide all additional documents listed below.  Submit your application packet to NEMASYM Director, Patricia Stock: This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

During this first year of our RCN we will grant two exchange visit awards of a maximum of $5,000.  Priority will be given to postdoctoral fellows, graduate students or undergraduate students. Applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents.  International visits (this is for non-USA  NemaSym members to US labs) may be considered but funding available may not cover all expenses.

Travel dates for this first cluster of awards must occur between December 15, 2009 and February 28, 2010.

Selection Criteria

Exchange participants will be selected based on:

  1. level of cross-disciplinary exchange and fostering of cross-disciplinary collaboration,
  2. impact of the exchange on the participant’s research goals and career plans,
  3. scientific quality (including feasibility and innovation) of the objective,
  4. broader educational impacts of the objective.

Post-visit report

A post-visit report to the network office (Patricia Stock, Dept. of Entomology, University of Arizona, This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ) will be required within 2 weeks of return.

The report should include "broader impacts" (see NSF proposal guidelines), a description of the research project carried out during the exchange visit, activities accomplished and future directions and an evaluation of how the exchange met each of the goals indicated by the selection criteria.

Any publications resulting from the exchange visit will acknowledge the National Science Foundation and this Research Collaboration Network Grant.

Required information:

  1. Application form
  2. Curriculum vitae. Include your name, address, institution, earned degrees, current degree program, honors and awards, research experience, and a list of publications and previous presentations.
  3. Project description and conference goals.  Describe your scientific interests and goals and provide an explanation of how this exchange will benefit you.
  4. A letter from your supervisor providing (1) a recommendation and  (2) verification of your status
  5. A letter of the principal investigator’s laboratory where exchange will take place indicating agreement for hosting exchange visit.
  6. Provide a budget and budget justification, including airfare costs, per diem and accommodations and indicate other source of funding as applicable.

Committee decisions: TBA

Successful applicants will receive an official communication and should confirm their acceptance and participation as soon as possible.
